Wix – One of the most popular drag-n-drop CMSs

What is Wix?

Founded in 2006, Wix is a cloud-based website builder. According to W3Techs, Wix has a 1.9% market share, making it one of the most popular website builders. You can easily and quickly create your personal portfolio, business website, photography website or simple webshop.
(Recommended for small/medium businesses)

Technical knowledge needed

One of the main Wix features is its highly intuitive drag and drop functions editor. This n makes it very accessible to beginners. Compared to Squarespace, the platform has more features and can be more intuitive in many ways.

Ability to customize

With more than 100 templates and 280 customizable apps available in the Wix Market, it covers most needs of a small company. By choosing the type of website you want, you can even let Wix automatically suggest a template and create a website for you. Do keep in mind that you will not be able to change and switch templates once your website is live.

Wix is somehow scalable and suitable for a wide range of projects from personal online portfolios to small business websites. For very large organizations, you may want to switch to another CMS as Wix’s functions are somewhat limited and might not fit large organizations’ needs.

It offers assistance by email, phone and through their FAQ section. However it should be noted, that according to the user reviews on Trustpilot, it can be difficult to get through to Wix’s support team.

As Wix runs on Wix’s own server, it results in fewer chances for your website to go down. In terms of loading pages speed, Wix might not be the fastest, but it should be fine for most use cases. As Wix is a closed system, upgrading the performance yourself will most likely not be possible.

In terms of security, like a lot of cloud-based website builder platforms, Wix includes an SSL certificate. SSL stands for “Secure Sockets Layer” and means that your visitors will be browsing safely through your website. It means that you don’t have to take care of keeping your certificate up to date.

PHP is Wix’s programming language and it has a noSQL database. Remember that you cannot add your own PHP code, because Wix is a closed system. It is, however, possible to add your own JavaScript and HTML.

The initial cost of Wix starts with the basic plan – with ads and no domain name. Wix’s premium plans go from 4,50€/month to 24,50€/month for websites and from 17€/month to 35€/month for an e-commerce website. Be aware that you will may be subjected to hidden fees.
